3/9 girls basketball: West Salem 62, Onalaska 40(2010/03/12) Senior Meagan Koepnick scored 24 points, including a 5-for-5 effort from the free-throw line, and sophomore Cierra Jacobson added 12 points to lead West Salem. Carmen Lezpona led the Hilltoppers with 11 points.
3/5 girls basketball: Tomah 38, Onalaska 36(2010/03/06) Diamond Richardson hit two free throws with 4.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give Tomah the lead for good. Amber Patterman led the Timberwolves with 12 points.
3/4 girls basketball: Eau Claire Memorial 34, Onalaska 30(2010/03/05) Tess Fadness scored a game-high 13 points for the Old Abes. Carolyn Greene scored 10 points for the Hilltoppers, who trailed 29-17 entering the fourth quarter.
2/27 gymnastics: Hilltoppers punch state ticket(2010/02/28) HOLMEN — She got a lousy draw in the floor exercise. And she couldn’t help but notice the carpet wasn’t sticking quite right to the floor.
2/26 boys basketball: Cool night: G-E-T beats MVC champ, wins share of Coulee(2010/02/27) ONALASKA — The Onalaska High School boys basketball team didn’t allow Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau to fire away from the 3-point line. But the Hilltoppers couldn’t stop the red-hot Redmen from posting another impressive victory.
2/23 boys hockey: Onalaska 4, Wisconsin Dells/Reedsburg 1(2010/02/25) Nathan Trannel scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season as the Hilltoppers advanced to the sectional final for the second straight year. Jesse Tredinnick scored his team-leading 22nd goal of the season for Onalaska.
2/19 girls basketball: Aquinas 38, Onalaska 17(2010/02/20) Sophomore guard Jenny Gallagher scored six of her game-high 14 points in the first quarter as the Blugolds took a 15-2 lead. Gallagher is averaging 11.7 points a game for Aquinas.
2/18 girls hockey: Wisconsin Rapids 3, Onalaska 1(2010/02/19) Wisconsin Rapids ended the Hilltoppers’ season in a WIAA regional final. Jayda Hoerres scored her 25th goal of the season for Onalaska, and teammate McKenzie Guth stopped 18 shots.
2/18 gymnastics: MVC Meet Team champion: Onalaska 129.65(2010/02/19) Onalaska’s Sam Lass won the uneven bars and floor exercise, leading the host Hilltoppers to first at the fourth and final MVC meet. Onalaska tied Holmen for the overall conference title. The Vikings’ Brianna Hawes won the balance beam and all-around.
2/16 girls basketball: Logan 65, Onalaska 20(2010/02/18) Logan clinched the MVC title, the fifth consecutive year it has held at least a share of the title. Senior forward Taylor Johnson scored 27 points on 12-for-15 shooting, and freshman guard Adaysha Williams had seven points and six steals.
2/15 boys basketball: Onalaska 55, Tomah 43(2010/02/16) The Hilltoppers clinched at least a share of their first MVC title since 1996. Onalaska freshman guard Matt Thomas scored nine of his game-high 15 points in the first quarter. Tony Thomas (pictured) and Nick Arenz added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Onalaska.
2/12 boys basketball: Onalaska 59, Sparta 42(2010/02/15) Tyler Adams scored a game-high 17 points for the Hilltoppers. Seven of Adams’ points came in the second quarter. Senior Jon Fendt led the Spartans with 12 points.
2/12 boys hockey: Onalaska 5, Winona 2(2010/02/15) Sophomore Keaton Bronston scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season for the Hilltoppers in their regular-season finale. Scott Sibik stopped 18 shots for Onalaska.
2/12 girls basketball: Sparta 68, Onalaska 28(2010/02/15) The Spartans led the Hilltoppers 39-7 at the half. Haylee Kirking scored all 14 of her points in the first half, and teammate Jade Jandt scored nine points in the second half.
2/10 boys hockey: Onalaska 4, La Crescent 1(2010/02/11) Keaton Bronston scored in both the first and second periods for the Hilltoppers. Bronston has scored 11 goals this season. Jesse Tredinnick and Nathan Trannel also scored for Onalaska.
2/10 girls hockey: Eau Claire North 2, Onalaska 0(2010/02/11) The Huskies scored both their goals in the second period. McKenzie Guth stopped 38 shots for the Hilltoppers, who were 0-for-2 on their power-play opportunities.
2/4 boys hockey: Onalaska 10, Black River Falls 5(2010/02/05) Jesse Tredinnick scored four goals and Nathan Trannel added three as the Hilltoppers’ offense hit on all cylinders, scoring a season-high 10 times, in a win over the Tigers. Onalaska scored four power-play goals and added a short-handed score.
2/4 girls basketball: Onalaska 44, Holmen 42(2010/02/05) Onalaska opened the game on an 11-0 run and scored the last six points of the first half, but Holmen maintained its stride. Val Cayler’s buzzer-beater sealed the game for the Hilltoppers, postponing Holmen coach Duane Vike’s 300th career win.
2/2 wrestling: Aquinas 57, Onalaska 10(2010/02/04) The Blugolds won their last six matches, three by pin. Aquinas’ J.P. Soldner improved to 24-10 at 135 pounds, and teammate Lucas Shappell improved to 22-9 at 215.
2/2 boys basketball: Onalaska 60, West Salem 45(2010/02/04) Senior guard Tyler Adams had three 3-pointers in the first quarter and scored 11 of the Hilltoppers’ 17 points. Adams finished with 15 points for Onalaska, ranked 10th in Division 2 by The Associated Press. Teammate Tony Thomas added 11 points.
2/2 boys hockey: Chippewa Falls 3, Onalaska 0(2010/02/04) Allie Tanzer scored twice and Lauren Scobie made 24 saves as the Cardinals blanked the Hilltoppers. McKenzie Guth made 29 saves for Onalaska.
2/1 girls basketball: Central 45, Onalaska 31(2010/02/02) The Red Raiders took control by opening the second half on an 8-0 run. Central’s Tabitha Roh scored eight of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter. Carmen Lezpona led the Hilltoppers with 10 points.
1/30 boys hockey: ONALASKA 3, University School of Milwaukee 3 (OT)(2010/02/01) University School of Milwaukee scored two unanswered goals to earn a tie with the Hilltoppers. Randy Burkhardt, Keaton Bronston and Vlado Hegely scored for Onalaska, and Scott Sibik made 30 saves.
1/29 boys basketball: Onalaska 48, Tomah 46(2010/01/30) Matt Thomas, Nick Arenz and Tony Thomas combined to score 13 of the Hilltoppers’ 14 fourth-quarter points. Arenz led Onalaska, ranked sixth in Division 2 by The Associated Press, with 19 points. Bronson Schultz led Tomah with 21 points.
1/28 girls basketball: Tomah 43, Onalaska 22(2010/01/29) Seven different players scored for the Timberwolves in the second quarter as Tomah opened up a 20-10 halftime lead. Brittni Schultz led the Timberwolves with 11 points.
1/26 girls hockey: Onalaska 6, New Richmond 3(2010/01/28) Miranda Kunes, Baylee Darling and Hannah Kepros scored on the power play to lead the Hilltoppers past the Tigers. Jayda Hoerres added two goals and an assist.
1/26 boys hockey: Onalaska 8, Viroqua 0(2010/01/28) Freshman Gabe Flood scored a pair of goals, and senior Vlado Hegely had three assists for the Hilltoppers. Hegely has 18 assists this season for Onalaska, which is 9-0-1 in its last 10 games.
1/22 skiing: Welch Village Invitational(2010/01/23) No team scores available Kaleb Christian of Aquinas/Onalaska/ West Salem finished second in the boys race with a time of 30.27 seconds. Ella Overholt of Central/Logan was ninth in the girls race with a time of 35.83 seconds.
1/21 boys hockey: Onalaska 3, Tomah 3 (OT)(2010/01/22) Randy Burkhardt’s penalty-shot goal with 4 minutes, 5 seconds left in the game tied the game for Onalaska. Burkhardt has scored seven goals this season.
1/21 girls basketball: Onalaska 42, Viroqua 41(2010/01/22) Carolyn Greene hit a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left in the game to put the Hilltoppers up by one. The Blackhawks’ Chelsea Berra, who scored a game high 24 points, missed a shot at the buzzer.
1/21 boys basketball: Onalaska 49, Adams-Friendship 32(2010/01/22) Nick Klos scored nine of his game-high 13 points in the second half as the Hilltoppers got past the Green Devils for their ninth straight win. Matt Thomas added three 3-pointers for Onalaska.
1/21 wrestling: Sparta 80, Onalaska 0(2010/01/22) Sparta’s Matt Tourdot (31-0) remained undefeated at 215 pounds by pinning Nick Benincasa in 28 seconds. The victory allowed the Spartans to remained tied with Tomah for first in the MVC.
1/21 girls hockey: Chippewa Falls 3, Onalaska 2 (OT)(2010/01/22) Chippewa Falls’ Allie Panzer and Onalaska’s Jayda Hoerres combined for all five goals in the game, but Panzer’s screened shot in overtime got through and won the game. Hoerres has five goals in her last two games and 24 for the season.
1/19 girls hockey: Onalaska 4, Reedsburg 1(2010/01/21) Forward Jayda Hoerres recorded her second hat trick of the season for the Hilltoppers. Onalaska goalie McKenzie Guth turned aside 27 shots.
1/16 girls basketball: Aquinas 54, Onalaska 23(2010/01/19) Aquinas freshman forward Katherine Gibson recorded her first career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds). Senior guard Alex Deshler scored a game-high 16 points for the Blugolds, who have won seven of their last eight games.
1/16 gymnastics: McLellan Invitational Division 1 champion: Onalaska 130.425(2010/01/19) Sam Lass was fourth on the balance beam (8.8) and bars (8.425) and fifth in the all-around (34.0) to lead Onalaska. West Salem/Aquinas sophomore Maddy Haupert won the beam (9.325) and was second in the all-around (35.9).
