3/18 football: Luther fills in gaps in schedule (2010/03/19)
When the WIAA decided two months ago to deny a proposal that would shift football competition from conference to district, Joel Babinec had a big job in front of him.

3/11 girls basketball: Arcadia 51, Onalaska Luther 32 (2010/03/13)
ARCADIA — The Raiders set the tone early, jumping out to a 15-9 lead after the first quarter of play. Senior Mianna Sobotta, who along with sophomore Marissa Tamke scored 10 points and had two of Arcadia’s three offensive putbacks in the opening quarter.

3/9 girls basketball: Onalaska Luther 62, Blair-Taylor 52 (2010/03/11)
The Knights trailed 42-29 in the third quarter when they went to a full-court press, which carried over into a 27-10 run in the fourth. Jessica Kish (21 points) and Leslie Klinski (20) led Luther. Lacy Dunlavy had 17 for the Wildcats.

3/5 girls basketball: West Salem 31, Onalaska Luther 26 (2010/03/09)
The Panthers’ defense clamped down in the final 30 seconds to ensure an undefeated conference season. West Salem led by one point late when it forced a turnover, then used free throws to seal the win. Meagan Koepnick (11 points) and Devin Dettmering (11) led the Panthers.

3/4 boys basketball: Arcadia 82, Onalaska Luther 67 (2010/03/05)
ARCADIA — The Raiders took control early by opening the game on a 12-3 run.

3/2 boys basketball: Onalaska Luther 74, Bangor 59 (2010/03/04)
Cody Krueger scored 21 points, hitting four of his team’s eight 3-pointers, and teammate Tyler Horstman scored 11 points with 15 rebounds as the Knights clipped the Cardinals. Adam Wuensch had 12 points and 11 rebound for Bangor, which committed 25 turnovers.

2/26 boys basketball: West Salem 82, Onalaska Luther 75 (2010/02/27)
Christian Koepnick, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, drained four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 30 points for West Salem. The Panthers made 17 of 23 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter. Joey Leibl led Luther with 15 points.

2/25 girls basketball: Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau 41, Onalaska Luther 40 (2010/02/26)
Amanda Scherr’s three-point play as time expired capped the Redmen’s come-from-behind victory. Justine Emerson and Steph Piddington both scored 11 points for G-E-T. Jessie Kish led the Knights with 13 points.

2/23 girls basketball: Sparta 50, Onalaska Luther 40 (2010/02/25)
The Spartans went 3-for-4 from the 3-point line in outscoring the Knights 19-6 in the third quarter to take control. Erin Murray scored 10 points and hit one of those third-quarter 3-pointers in the third for Sparta.

2/19 girls basketball: Arcadia 45, Onalaska Luther 41 (2010/02/20)
Mianna Sobotta made three 3-pointers and scored 17 for the Raiders, who won despite the Knights’ large free-throw advantage (Luther made 23 of 31; Arcadia 10 of 21). Leslie Klinski made 14 of 15 free throws for Luther and scored 20 points.

2/18 boys basketball: Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau 84, Onalaska Luther 57 (2010/02/19)
The Redmen had five players score in double figures for the second time this season. Josh Jenkins had six of G-E-T’s 16 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 24 points. Riley Bambenek scored 15 for G-E-T.

2/16 girls basketball: Westby 59, Onalaska Luther 40 (2010/02/18)
Jenna Engh and Abby Midtlien combined for 29 points for the Norsemen, who have won 12 of their last 13 games. Westby’s pressure defense held the Knights to 32 percent from the field. Leslie Klinski led Luther with 16 points.

2/12 boys basketball: Arcadia 71, Onalaska Luther 46 (2010/02/16)
The Raiders rebounded from their first conference loss on Tuesday to G-E-T. Tim Rindahl had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Zach Bisek had 16 points, including 4 of 6 3-point attempts for Arcadia.

2/11 girls basketball: Onalaska Luther 56, Mauston 45 (2010/02/12)
Kelsey Gerke and Katlin Zillmer both scored all of their points in the second quarter giving the Knights the lead. Teammate Jessie Kish had 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Kayla Thomas scored 28 of the Golden Eagles’ 45 game points.

2/10 girls basketball: Onalaska Luther 63, Melrose-Mindoro 45 (2010/02/11)
The Knights held a decided advantage at the free-throw line, making 21 of 34 attempts to 9 of 22 for the Mustangs. Leslie Klinski scored 10 points to lead a balanced Luther offense.

2/10 boys basketball: Westby 76, Onalaska Luther 57 (2010/02/11)
Chris Neely scored 10 of his team-high 18 points in the first half as the Norseman led the whole way. Cody Rudie chipped in 15 points for Westby, who allowed only one Knight to score in double figures (Cody Krueger 24).

Boys basketball: LA CRESCENT 89, Onalaska Luther 72 (2010/02/09)
The Lancers, ranked fifth in Class AA by Minnesota Basketball News, shot 61 percent (23-for-38) from the floor in the first half and took a 51-21 lead. James Lazarcik (pictured) led La Crescent with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Joey Leibl led the Knights with 22 points.

2/5 girls basketball: Onalaska Luther 64, Viroqua 59 (2010/02/06)
Onalaska Luther trailed by 15 at halftime, but rallied by outscoring Viroqua 49-28 in the second half. Jessie Kish led the Knights with 23 points. Chelsea Berra led Viroqua with 26 points.

2/4 boys basketball: Westby 63, Onalaska Luther 53 (2010/02/05)
Nick Anderson scored 25 points, hitting 10 of 16 shots from the field, to lead the Norsemen to a conference road win. Chris Neely added 16 points for Westby and Joey Leibl hit four 3-pointers and finished with 20 for the Knights.

2/2 boys basketball: Onalaska Luther 85, Independence 26 (2010/02/04)
Austin Eggert had 10 rebounds and 5 points for the Knights. Joey Leibl scored a game high 16 points and teammate Cody Krueger scored 15 points. Luther shot 39-for-84 from the floor.

2/1 boys basketball: Onalaska Luther 60, Black River Falls 50 (2010/02/02)
The Knights shot 37 percent (10-for-27) from the floor in the first half en route to taking a 26-19 lead. Joey Leibl (pictured) led Onalaska Luther with 18 points. Greg VonRuden led the Tigers with 11 points.

1/29 boys basketball: Viroqua 50, Onalaska Luther 48 (2010/02/01)
Ben Brooke led the Blackhawks with 17 points and had 11 rebounds. Joey Leibl was 8-for-9 from the free-throw line and scored 20 points for the Knights. Teammate Cody Krueger added 17 points and went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.

1/28 girls basketball: Black River Falls 40, Onalaska Luther 27 (2010/01/29)
The Tigers went 8-for-12 from the floor in the fourth quarter and earned their first conference victory. Emma Erlandson scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter for Black River Falls. Leslie Klinski led Luther with nine points.

1/26 boys basketball: Onalaska Luther 59, Black River Falls 47 (2010/01/28)
Joey Leibl drained two of the Knights’ three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Onalaska Luther pulled away. Cody Krueger scored a game-high 17 points for the Knights, and Leibl added 16.

1/23 wrestling: Fox Valley Lutheran Invitational (2010/01/26)
Team champion: Winneconne 207 Onalaska Luther’s Travis McDonald defeated Winneconne’s Kyle Epping to win the 189-pound division of the Fox Valley Lutheran Invitational. Jerad Cary (103) also took third for Luther, which placed fifth.

1/23 girls basketball: West Salem 33, Onalaska Luther 18 (2010/01/26)
The Panthers held the Knights to one field goal on their way to a 15-2 halftime lead and 10th victory in 11 Coulee Classic games. Junior Meagan Koepnick scored a game-high 12 points for West Salem.

1/21 girls basketball: La Crescent 64, Onalaska Luther 38 (2010/01/23)
Junior guard Jena Kadlec scored eight of the Lancers’ 21 first-quarter points. Kadlec, who scored a game-high 22 points, is averaging 19.7 points a game. Jessie Kish led the Knights with 15 points.

1/19 boys basketball: Onalaska Luther 70, De Soto 40 (2010/01/21)
Joey Leibl went 11-for-29 from the floor and scored a game-high 26 points for the Knights. Cody Krueger, who entered the game as the area’s leading scorer at 22 points a game, scored 10 for Luther.
