6/2 DIVISION 2 BASEBALL: Tomahawk 4, Black River Falls 3(2009/07/10) Eddie Malis had a three-run double in the bottom of the first inning, and that kept it in front until the Tigers scored three in the top of the sixth. Greg Von Ruden’s two-run single highlighted the sixth before Tomahawk broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth.
5/29 WIAA softball: Altoona 4, Black River Falls 3(2009/06/02) The Tigers rallied late in the game, but it was too little, too late. Black River Falls’ Christine Mach hit a two-out two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to close the gap to 4-3, but the next batter grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
5/28 D2 softball: BLACK RIVER FALLS 8, DURAND 0(2009/05/29) Christine Mack took a no-hitter into the sixth inning for the Tigers. Teammate Melinda Laudon’s three-run home run was part of a six-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach. Mack and Danton Green each had two RBI for Black River Falls.
5/27 track and field: Panthers’ regional title on hold(2009/05/28) BLACK RIVER FALLS — Perennial Division 2 state track and field power West Salem appears poised for another title run. At the very least, the Panther girls will likely make plenty of noise at the WIAA state track and field meet on June 5-6.
5/26 boys tennis: Viroqua sectional(2009/05/27) Team leader: Aquinas 24 points Aquinas’ No. 2 doubles team of Matt Haupart and Luke Riley rallied to win the finla two sets after dropping the opener
5/21 baseball: Black River Falls 10, Mondovi 6(2009/05/26) The Tigers doubled their victory total from a year ago (6-14 in 2008), thanks in part to Geoff Laudon. Laudon hit a two-run home run in Black River Falls’ four-run first inning. Teammate Eric Millis went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs as the Tigers finished with a game-high 16 hits.
5/21 softball: Black River Falls 7, Onalaska 4(2009/05/26) The Tigers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 4-all tie and give coach Mary Rykken her 250th career victory. Ashley Gulbronson had a two-run double, and Mary’s daughter, Megan, was the winning pitcher in relief with two strikeouts and one walk.
5/18 baseball: Nekoosa 1, Black River Falls 0(2009/05/19) A throwing error allowed Nekoosa to score in the fourth inning, and that was the difference between two of the top teams in an upcoming WIAA Division 2 regional. Alex Johnson, the No. 9 hitter for the third-seeded Tigers, reached third base in the third inning but Dan Britts and top-seeded Nekoosa shut down the threat.
5/18 softball: Black River Falls 2, Onalaska 0(2009/05/19) Ashley Gulbronsen’s two-out, two-run double in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the game-winning hit for the Tigers. Megan Rykken scattered three hits and earned the complete-game victory.
5/14 softball: GALE-ETTRICK-TREMPEALEAU 4, BLACK RIVER FALLS 1(2009/05/16) Nicole Walski’s two-run double keyed the Redmen’s three-run third inning. Justine Emerson scattered three hits and earned the complete-game victory. Christine Mach struck out 10 for the Tigers.
5/12 softball: Black River Falls 8, Viroqua 3(2009/05/14) Black River Falls’ Christine Mach had run-scoring singles in the first, third and fifth innings. Mach also struck out six and scattered four hits en route to earning the complete-game victory.
5/12 boys golf: Coulee Conference Meet(2009/05/14) Team champion: Black River Falls 152 Black River Falls’ Tyler Millis and Viroqua’s Joe Poshepny tied for medalist honors at Fox Hollow Golf Course with par rounds of 35. The Tigers edged second-place Arcadia by three strokes with the help of 37s from Matt Gates and Jordan Tranberg.
5/9 baseball: WESTBY 5, Onalaska Luther 0 (2009/05/11) The Norsemen clinched won their second Coulee Conference title in a row with the win. Brett Sebion went 3-for-3, including a two-out, RBI double in the fourth for Westby. Teammate Alleck Olerud went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
