4/8 track: Arcadia’s Vazquez shines at MVC/Coulee meet

HOLMEN, Wis. — Arcadia High School sophomore Maya Vazquez was the big individual winner in the MVC/Coulee track and field meet at Empire Stadium on Tuesday.

Vazquez won the 100-meter dash (12.88 seconds), the 200 (26.36) and the long jump (17 feet, 4 inches) and helped the Raiders place second in the 1,600 relay (4:26.95).

“We put her in some different things that she doesn’t really run, like the 100,” Arcadia coach Lynn Sonnentag said. “She did pretty good.” Vazquez’s performance — her 200-meter time is the best in the area this season — highlighted a meet that was won by Central’s boys and Holmen’s girls, although team scores were not available.

Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau placed second among the boys teams, while Arcadia was second among the girls teams.

Rainy weather kept the boys pole vault and girls discus from being completed.

Holmen’s victorious girls were led by winning efforts in all four relays and from individuals Hanna Niccum (100 hurdles, 16.94), Jesse Heiden (3,200, 12:36.12) and Lauren Hicke (high jump, 4-10).

Onalaska Luther junior Jessi Smith kept Niccum from posting a hurdle sweep by winning the 300s in a season-best time of 49.89.

Central’s boys used a balanced effort to win, but they did get an individual victory from junior Mike Sartin-Tarm in the 800 (2:05.94).

The Red Raiders, who also received first-place points from their 400 relay team (47.03) placed second and third in three events.

G-E-T senior Travis Nelson won the 100 (11.79) and 200 (23.36) and Tomah junior Derek Storkel the 1,600 (4:35.6) and 3,200 (10:10.85) as the only double individual winners.

Holmen’s boys won the 1,600 (3:33.05) and 3,200 (8:38.12) relays.
