6/13 Baseball: DIVISION 3 state CHAMPIONSHIP preview
By the Tribune staff
WHO: Aquinas (19-7) vs. Eau Claire Regis (16-7)
WHEN/WHERE: Today, noon, at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wis.
AT STAKE: Aquinas is trying to win its first state baseball championship since 1987. Regis won the Division 3 title in 2002.
PREVIOUS MEETING: The Blugolds beat the Ramblers 5-2 in the regular season.
REGIS SEMIFINAL: The Ramblers beat Kenosha St. Joseph 5-2, allowing two runs in the first inning and then scoring the last five. Undefeated Chris Musser threw for Regis, meaning he can’t throw today. The Blugolds are likely to see either Kurt Roubal (4-2, 2.76 ERA in the regular season) or Jim Donnellan (2-1, 2.57 ERA in the regular season) in today’s game. Trevor Lyga (2-2, 2.30 ERA in the regular season) is the logical choice to pitch for Aquinas today. Ryan Fahey, who saved Wednesday’s win over Stevens Point Pacelli, is another option.
ANOTHER CHANCE: Both of these teams qualified for the Division 3 state tournament in basketball, too. While Regis lost in the semifinals, Aquinas won and then lost in the title game. Fahey, Zach Rickaway, Bobby Reinhart and Sam Pederson were on that basketball team and now prepare for their second state championship game in three months.
