5/14 Baseball: Wonewoc-Center shocks Bangor

WONEWOC, Wis. — To be honest, Tony Howe didn’t know if his players truly realized what they had done Monday. Howe knew very well what the Wonewoc-Center High School baseball team had accomplished. The Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, including the game-winner when Stewart Thompson scored on an error, to beat Bangor 6-5. It was the first loss for the Cardinals, the top-ranked team in Division 3 according to the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association. It went without saying that Howe was thrilled about seeing his team upset Bangor (17-1, 12-1 Scenic Bluffs Conference). But as far as getting a read on the Indians’ emotions ...

“It’s hard to get a pulse on these guys sometimes,” Howe said. “I think they wish that they didn’t have a 10-day layover until their next game.”

The Indians (7-9, 7-7) played the sixth and seventh innings with eight players as left fielder Nick Miller injured his knee. But they had more than enough energy to rally past Bangor. Micah Fulton walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and advanced to second when Thompson was hit by a pitch. Fulton and Thompson stole third and second base, respectively. Fulton scored on a fielder’s choice, and Thompson scored the game-winner on a throwing error.

“The kids were very upset (about the loss). But they realize that now they’ve got a challenge in front of them,” Bangor coach Ryan Vogler said. “They also realize that we’ve still got an unbelievable thing going.”
